In classical mechanics, time is absolute in the sense that the time of an event is independent of the observer.
According to the theory of relativity it depends on the observer's frame of reference. Time is considered as a fourth coordinate required, along with three spatial coordinates, to specify an event.
A continuous, measurable quantity in which events occur in a sequence proceeding from the past through the present to the future.
An interval separating two points of this quantity; a duration. A system or reference frame in which such intervals are measured or such quantities are calculated.

First, there is no absolute location in either space or time; location is always the situation of an object or event relative to other objects and events.
Second, space and time are not in themselves real that is, not substances. Space and time are, rather, ideal. Space and time are just metaphysically illegitimate ways of perceiving certain virtual relations between substances.
They are phenomena or, strictly speaking, illusions although they are illusions that are well-founded upon the internal properties of substances It is sometimes convenient to think of space and time as something "out there," over and above the entities and their relations to each other, but this convenience must not be confused with reality.
Space is nothing but the order of co-existent objects; time nothing but the order of successive events. This is usually called a relational theory of space and time.

Religion, Revelation and Reason. Mercer University Press. Profane time, as Eliade points out, is linear. As man dwelt increasingly in the profane and a sense of history developed, the desire to escape into the sacred began to drop in the background.
The myths, tied up with cyclic time, were not so easily operative. He could not return to cyclic time and re-enter sacred space though its myths.
In the Judaeo-Christian religions — Judaism, Christianity, Islam — history is taken seriously, and linear time is accepted.
The cyclic time of the primordial mythical consciousness has been transformed into the time of profane man, but the mythical consciousness remains.
It has been historicized. The Christian mythos and its accompanying ritual are bound up, for example, with history and center in authentic history, especially the Christ-event.
Sacred space, the Transcendent Presence, is thus opened up to secular man because it meets him where he is, in the linear flow of secular time.
The Christian myth gives such time a beginning in creation, a center in the Christ-event, and an end in the final consummation. The Promise of Hermeneutics.
Eerdmans Publishing. We need to note the close ties between teleology, eschatology, and utopia. In Christian theology, the understanding of the teleology of particular actions is ultimately related to the teleology of history in general, which is the concern of eschatology.

Space and time do not exist in and of themselves, but in some sense are the product of the way we represent things.
The[y] are ideal, though not in the sense in which Leibniz thought they are ideal figments of the imagination. The ideality of space is its mind-dependence: it is only a condition of sensibility Kant concluded Much of the argumentation pertaining to space is applicable, mutatis mutandis , to time, so I will not rehearse the arguments.
As space is the form of outer intuition, so time is the form of inner intuition Kant claimed that time is real, it is "the real form of inner intuition.
Kant's Transcendental Idealism". Archived from the original on 26 April Time, Kant argues, is also necessary as a form or condition of our intuitions of objects.
The idea of time itself cannot be gathered from experience because succession and simultaneity of objects, the phenomena that would indicate the passage of time, would be impossible to represent if we did not already possess the capacity to represent objects in time Another way to put the point is to say that the fact that the mind of the knower makes the a priori contribution does not mean that space and time or the categories are mere figments of the imagination.
Kant is an empirical realist about the world we experience; we can know objects as they appear to us.
He gives a robust defense of science and the study of the natural world from his argument about the mind's role in making nature.
All discursive, rational beings must conceive of the physical world as spatially and temporally unified, he argues.

Barbour, Julian Durnholde Keep was the headquarters of the orcish internment camps in southern Lordaeron following the Horde's defeat in the Second War.
At this time, Thrall was a year-old slave to human officer Aedelas Blackmoore , who intended to use Thrall as a puppet Warchief to control the orcish Horde and thus gain power over his fellow humans.
However, Thrall knew that he was destined for more, and so he made his escape from Durnholde to find others of his kind, eventually discovering the Frostwolf Clan and his place as Warchief.
This instance contains the entire Hillsbrad Foothills area as it appeared 7 years ago, before the Horde destroyed Durnholde, and Tarren Mill fell to the undead.
Medivh , the last of the magical Guardians of Tirisfal , was possessed at birth by the evil Titan, Sargeras. It was Medivh who first contacted the corrupt orc sorcerer Gul'dan , also in the service of the Burning Legion.
Together they sought to bridge the dimensional gap between Azeroth and Draenor , homeworld of the orcs , to facilitate the destruction of Azeroth. On the appointed day both Medivh and Gul'dan concentrated their considerable magic energies, forcing the collapse of the dimensional barrier.
The setting of this event is the Black Morass , now known as the Blasted Lands. At the pinnacle of the second battle against the Burning Legion, it was clear to the races of Azeroth that the only way to achieve victory would be to unite their forces in a final, desperate push for victory.
The night elves , led by Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind , the new Horde , led by Thrall and Cairne Bloodhoof , and the remnants of the Alliance of Lordaeron , led by Jaina Proudmoore , united their forces against Archimonde and the demonic forces of the Burning Legion in a massive, epic battle to defend Azeroth.
Victory was narrowly achieved, even as Archimonde reached the World Tree and attempted to drain it of its energy.
The next instance, included in the second expansion, is Stratholme several years in the past. Players join Arthas in "cleansing" the city of plagued villagers, one of the final acts in a series of personal changes that culminates in Arthas becoming a death knight of the Lich King , and one of the first acts into his descent to madness.
This was a level within Warcraft III. Jaina Proudmoore and Uther are seen in this instance briefly, as Arthas had a disagreement with his mentor before the culling of the people of Stratholme, and disbanded the order of paladins to which Uther belonged — the Knights of the Silver Hand.
The Dragon Aspects that occupy Wyrmrest Temple have a problem: They know that if they cannot destroy their fallen brother Deathwing , he'll consume the world.
There's only one artefact with the power to weaken the Black Scourge, but it has long since been destroyed: the Dragon Soul.
To retrieve the golden disk the Aspects must charge the heroes of Azeroth with its retrieval from the depths of time. That means sending players to the Caverns of Time and Nozdormu.
Upon arriving, the Aspect of Time will tell them that his ability to send them back to the battle at the Well of Eternity is being interfered with by an entity in the future.
First then, players must go forward into the Endtime and kill Murozond. Within they'll witness a charred vision of the world should the plan to defeat Deathwing fail.
With Murozond's defeat, players will be able to venture into the past and partake in the near-apocalyptic clash at the Well of Eternity.
There, players will fight alongside such prominent characters of Warcraft lore as Illidan, Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande.
They'll see the demon Mannoroth and the delusional Highborne queen, Azshara. Once the Dragon Soul is secured, players will return to the present and in the third instance will be charged with protecting both Thrall and the artifact as they make their way to Wyrmrest Temple in Northrend.
In The Hour of Twilight, they'll discover the Temple is now under full assault by Deathwing and his myriad forces.
It's a conceit that players will be familiar with from Wrath of the Lich King's patch 3. The raid picks up right where the final instance finishes.
Thrall and the Dragon Soul are now nearby Wyrmrest Temple and raiders begin by attempting to relieve the beleaguered Aspects. As players reach the summit of the Temple they'll encounter Ultraxion , one of the most powerful Twilight dragons ever created.
Once the Twilight dragon has been bested, Thrall is able unleash the charged Dragon Soul upon Deathwing. The raid then boards an airship in pursuit of the wounded dragon who is now flying for the Maelstrom and the safety of Deepholm.
Having dispatched the Twilight's Hammer, players will then leave the airship and climb onto the back of Deathwing himself.
Scrambling on the huge dragon, players will be tasked with prying up these huge elementium plates from his back to allow Thrall and the Aspects to shoot the Dragon Soul at him again.
Due to lore reasons, primarily the absence of certain races at the time periods portrayed in the CoT instances, the bronze dragonflight will place the spell [ Human Illusion ] on all draenei , night elf , worgen , blood elf , tauren , orc , Forsaken , troll , and goblin player characters, turning them into human forms of themselves - but retaining all of that character's actual gear on their new temporary model.
Death knight players will still retain their echo voices and blue glowing eyes. Before patch 4. All players appear as night elves in the Well of Eternity instance, similar to the Human Illusion in the Culling of Stratholme and Escape from Durnholde Keep instances.
Alexston Chrome appears first; he appears to be a tavernkeeper and operates an establishment named the Tavern of Time where he sells five varieties of alcohol.
Next to appear is Yarley , a dwarven armorer who sells ordinary blacksmithing supplies and can repair your gear. The last vendors to appear are Galgrom , and his unfortunate brother Bortega who's voice has been altered due to the strain of time travel , orcs who have become stranded between some point in the past and the present.
Also, other factionless NPC's and they, like the vendors, are members of the Keepers of Time faction with the exception of Alexston Chrome, who appears to be factionless.
As of Patch 2. In the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, players can also use the portal located at the Violet Citadel in Dalaran or speak to Zidormi standing in front of it.
Unlike the transport from Shattrath, there is no reputation requirement. Players can teleport to Aegwynn's Gallery bottom floor of Chamber of the Guardian, the center of Dalaran and descend to the bottom of the room past the Pillars of Creation to the portals.
In the south, amid a mountain cluster, lies this mysterious place. Bronze dragons dwell here for reasons unknown.
As Brann Bronzebeard and his guides led him close to the caves, the guides refused to enter for reasons that soon became clear. They saw, to their surprise, a dwarf coming out of the entrance who look a bit like Brann.
This page here is one of our efforts to communicate the scientific knowledge about the pandemic. So far it has been seen by more than 25 million on YouTube, and many others on other platforms where it was reposted.
We know how to slow the speed of infection and flatten the curve. You can help by spreading your knowledge about the pandemic and by teaching others how they can protect themselves and those around them.
Slowing down the pandemic is the goal of all of us right now. And as explained above the best way to contribute to this goal is to not get infected yourself — by washing your hands, wearing a mask, and watching your distance.
Beyond the individual level we can join forces to achieve even more. Cooperation is the strength of our species and our most promising strategy to make progress against the pandemic is the global collaboration in science, technology, and political organization.
Humanity made a lot of progress against big problems before — if you have doubts, read our Short History of Global Living Conditions.
Innovation — our collaborative success in research and development — were often key to our success. Scientific breakthroughs made it possible to make decisive progress against problems that seemed insurmountable before.
Big innovations now could make all the difference between a pandemic that spreads around the globe and requires us to live a life in constant worry of new outbreaks or the possibility that we find the technological innovation to protect ourselves from the virus.
In recent decades humanity has been extraordinarily successful in the fight against viruses and bacteria — we found vaccines against diseases that once killed millions every year, we reduced child mortality around the world, and in every region of the world we now live twice as long as our ancestors just a few generations ago.
In this pandemic too, we can hope — but not expect — that science comes to the rescue. The pandemic will come to an end when the world population has immunity against the disease.
Until there is a vaccine more and more people will contract the disease and the rapid rise of cases will only come to an end when the world population has reached the immunity threshold in this natural way.
We have previously looked into the history of vaccine development. The measles vaccine was found relatively rapidly: it took only 10 years from the discovery of the pathogen to the development of the first vaccine.
The hope is that for COVID we will beat all previous records and get to a safe vaccine much faster than ever before.
Several institutions maintain the websites in which they list COVID candidate vaccines that are currently being developed:.
Without data we would have no chance to respond appropriately to the pandemic. Embedding our charts in your article is as easy as embedding a YouTube video.
And you can customize each chart to show the countries and measures you want to write about in your article.
Our work on the pandemic is trusted by the media and cited by the best researchers. As explained above: without testing there is no data on the number of cases, and without data no country can respond appropriately to the pandemic.
This is why we made the global data on testing our focus here at Our World in Data. We built the most reliable database on testing and on our dedicated page you can find the data, the country-by-country documentation and a clear explanation of why testing matters.
Our global dataset and our research on why testing is key to a successful response to the pandemic:. The most important metric is neither the number of cases nor the number of tests, but the metric that brings these two counts together: the rate of tests that confirm a case.
This metric — the positive rate — was shown above on this page. Individually however we can not always easily choose to stay away from each other.
Many of us have to go to work, others have to go to school. In these cases it can be helpful for the government to intervene and set up policies that have the goal to slow the spread of the virus by enforcing physical distance between people.
These measures restrict the freedom of individuals and are socially very costly — kids learn less and adults earn less. It is therefore important to study and learn which policy measures are most successful and least costly and adopt these.
The approach that we followed here at Our World in Data is to learn the lessons from those countries that responded successfully.
You find three in-depth studies of three of the more successful countries in our work on the Pandemic Exemplars :. One of the most severe policy responses are stay-at-home requirements or household lockdowns.
The map here shows which measures different countries have currently in place. But it is also possible to study the past months: by moving the time slider below the map you can see how these policies have changed in each country over the course of the pandemic.
Note that there may be sub-national or regional differences in restrictions. The policy categories shown may not apply at all sub-national levels.
A country is coded as having these restrictions if at least some sub-national regions have implemented them. These two interactive maps show where schools and workplaces are closed as a response to the pandemic.
Here too it is possible to see the change over time by moving the time slider below the maps. This interactive map shows which countries have implemented restrictions on international travel.
From March onwards many countries closed their borders. This interactive chart maps government policies on restrictions on internal travel between regions and cities.
The nine metrics used to calculate the Government Stringency Index are: school closures; workplace closures; cancellation of public events; restrictions on public gatherings; closures of public transport; stay-at-home requirements; public information campaigns; restrictions on internal movements; and international travel controls.
The map here presents this metric. By clicking on any country you can how the response has changed in each country over time.
How effective have these policies been in reducing contact between people? What impact has it had on how people across the world work, live, and which places they visit?
This new dataset from Google measures visitor numbers to specific categories of location e. Measuring it relative to a normal value for that day of the week is helpful because people obviously often have different routines on weekends versus weekdays.

Is it possible to make progress against the pandemic? Two questions guide this daily updated publication on the global COVID pandemic: How can we make progress against the pandemic?
And, are we making progress? Our goal is two-fold: To provide reliable, global and open data and research on how the COVID pandemic is spreading, what impact the pandemic has, how we can make progress against the pandemic, and whether the measures countries are taking are successful or not; And to build an infrastructure that allows research colleagues — and everyone who is interested — to navigate and understand this data and research.
Every country profile is updated daily. Every profile includes four sections: Deaths: How many deaths from Coronavirus have been reported?
Is the number of deaths still increasing? How does the death rate compare to other countries? Testing: How much testing for coronavirus do countries conduct?
When did they start and how does it compare with other countries? Cases: How many cases were confirmed? And is your country bending the curve?
Government responses: What measures did countries take in response to the pandemic? We can see three different ways in which the pandemic has affected countries: Some countries have not been able to contain the pandemic.
The death toll there continues to rise quickly week after week. Italy, Germany, and many European countries followed this trajectory.
Some were able to prevent a large outbreak altogether. Shown in the chart are South Korea and Norway. These countries had rapid outbreaks, but were then able to reduce the number of deaths very quickly to low numbers.
